Private Residence
Adaptation af a manufacturing building
This project started at a time when the area was at the beginning
of an unpredictable real-estate boom emerging from an otherwise
aging and desolate manufacturing district. As this type of
neighborhood provides no context (apart from the “uncertain”),
a residence has to work as a self-contained entity.
Part of the new building (only the street façade with
a second floor room remains of the old structure) is still
used commercially, which allows full lot coverage. This aspect
led to the development of a series of courtyards on all levels
throughout the entire structure rather than having just a
single exposed yard in the back.
These openings provide access to light and air, and allow
for living spaces on all floors. Internal circulation allows
for the whole building to be one generous residence or to
be divided up into three full-featured units with their own
private outdoor zones, separate entrances and access to a
central main terrace on the second floor.
