Apartment Building
New apartment and commercial building

This mixed use building was conceived as a renovation and extension of a three story wood frame house that would follow certain existing perimeters but would upgrade the entire structure to a high profile standard. To keep the venture efficient the volume of the building was extended to the legal maximum and great effort was given to set modern standards for living qualities, materials, energy efficiency and construction techniques.

space

The preexisting outline of the foundation inspired the orientation of the building to face all four directions simultaneously. This unity with the surroundings is reflected in the various views available from each side, generous balconies which serve as exterior extensions of each living space, and the open character of the interior layout. The three apartments, each occupying an entire floor, express the continuous space of a modern loft but include a mechanism that designates and separates zones which provide the option of individual privacy.

matter

As a modern addition to a lively traditional neighborhood the facade of the building adopts a common local pattern of horizontal siding and interprets this aesthetic in the form of a specially crafted standing seam metal cladding. The use of zinc coated copper here guarantees durability and provides a long lasting presence through the changing colors of its ageing process. Cedar wood and tile work in their custom application also support this notion of time-weathered materials.
